New iOS 18.1 Update Breaks Support for FIDO2.1 Final Keys

21-11-2024

The latest iOS 18.1 release has introduced an unexpected issue affecting FIDO2.1 Final keys, rendering them incompatible with the new update. This issue is not limited to Token2's security keys but impacts devices from all manufacturers adhering to the FIDO2.1 final specification.

We are actively investigating the root cause of this disruption and have reached out to Apple for clarification and resolution. FIDO2.1 is a critical standard for modern, secure, passwordless authentication, and ensuring its continued functionality is paramount.

In the meantime, we recommend users who rely heavily on FIDO2.1 keys for authentication to delay updating to iOS 18.1, if possible. We will provide updates as soon as we have further information from Apple or a timeline for a fix. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Token2 is offering currently the most secure FIDO2 keys for enterprise customers, known as the PIN+ Series FIDO2 keys. These keys, certified by the FIDO alliance, enforce PIN complexity at the firmware level. This unique feature is not available with other keys, even those marked as FIPS-certified.
